Energy Efficiency
in Health Care
June 13, 2011
8:00 am - 12:00 pm

A growing number of hospitals are seeking to fully leverage energy-saving opportunities in their operation & maintenance practices. Energy efficiency and renewable energy are mission-critical investments, enabling hospitals to reduce current operating costs and mitigate the risks of future price volatility. While energy is a small part of a hospital’s total operating budget, it’s a cost center that managers can control — with savings that go right to the bottom line. Returns on energy-saving investments ultimately make more resources available for quality patient care.

This half-day workshop will cover the strategic steps a health care institution should take to integrate energy efficiency measures and identify how hospitals use renewable energy technologies. Come learn about the future of energy efficiency and renewable energy in healthcare!

Green Healthcare Facility Tour and Cocktail Reception

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital
June 13, 2011
1:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Co-presented by
HDR Architecture, Inc.

Joining the groundswell of green buildings crossing the globe, the U.S. Army and U.S. Department of Defense will soon open the premier military community hospital in the country – and the world’s first hospital that successfully marries the Military Health System’s Evidence-based Design (EBD) principles with LEEDฎ requirements. Currently under construction, the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, south of Washington, D.C., a 1.27-million-square-foot facility, features an inpatient medical center including 120 beds, outpatient clinical space, cafeteria, pharmacy and a number of other services.

The tour will explore the energy saving systems such as heat recovery chillers, water conservation technologies such as the rainwater and condensation collection system, and Evidence-based Design features such as interior and exterior gardens integrated into the project, and the Sustainable Return on Investment (SROI) analyses used as decision-making tool during the design process. The SROI analysis, which is an enhanced version of a life-cycle cost analysis that incorporates risk and provides triple bottom line results, revealed that the building will avoid 4,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year resulting from its energy and water efficient design. These results and more will be presented during the one-hour tour of the facility.

JUST UPDATED:
Final Program Agenda for June 13-14
(please visit this page frequently for the most current agenda and speaker announcements)

Industry and government organizations in the healthcare sector are increasingly addressing the impacts of climate change and energy on operations.  The sector is amongst the more intensive users of energy and natural resources in support of its operations.  As energy costs rise and availability of natural resources declines, the healthcare community will face significant challenges and opportunities related to procurement, facilities management and design.

Recent studies indicate a convergence of interests related to climate change, energy, and medical and global health. This workshop will examine the role of supply chain programs, green building design and retrofits, and facilities management in improving patient health and response to treatment, and reducing energy consumption, operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

On June 13-14, 2011, the Association of Climate Change Officers invites you to a series of interactive discussions examining opportunities to modernize healthcare institutions and facilities with respect to energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and improved patient response.

Program Highlights

  • Case studies on developing metrics related to the supply chain, establishing value chain management systems, achieving ROIs, engaging vendors and modernizing evaluation criteria
